In the early days of Facebook, I had the opportunity to be one of the first designers to create an interactive testimonials demo presentation for their growth efforts. My project involved developing an interactive video presentation to introduce Facebook and showcase its potential to major brands.
Facebook contracted Screamstream Interactive to design an interactive video for their early marketing and sales materials. Screamstream Interactive was a small team of four, and I served as the lead Designer. My responsibilities included creating the interactive presentation and UI templates that highlighted Facebook's capabilities to potential brand partners, such as Apple, and explained what Facebook was to prospective users.
With no official brand guidelines or existing assets, I created an animation style that was minimal yet effectively mapped to the existing site look and feel. At the time, Facebook was only accessible to college students, and I was granted special access to the platform to onboard and explain its features. I took screenshots, and created UI elements to illustrate features, and the user experience being discussed in the video. Facebook provided recorded testimonials, and I handled all aspects of design, compilation, scripting, playback testing, and animation.
The main challenge was conveying Facebook's innovative potential to brands and users unfamiliar with social media. Creating engaging interactive content required meticulous attention to detail, visual storytelling with UI and data points, expertise in scripting for playback control, and creating brand visual language elements and animations.
The interactive presentation successfully showcased Facebook's features and capabilities. Not long after we delivered the project, Facebook got offers for billions of dollars which were turned down. The UI template comps provided a vision of what brand pages could look like for future development. The rest is history.
This project highlights the importance of visualization in showcasing new ideas.
